Does magnesium help muscle cramps?

What the evidence shows

A Cochrane review pooled 11 randomized trials involving 735 participants. The most reliable older-adult studies found small, statistically non-significant differences from placebo, while pregnancy trials were too biased and heterogeneous for a confident conclusion.[1], [2]

Older-adult nighttime-cramp evidence is largely negative

The Cochrane review included five studies of idiopathic cramps, mainly nighttime leg cramps in older adults. Differences from placebo in cramp frequency, intensity, and duration were small and not statistically significant.[1], [2]

A separate meta-analysis reached a similar conclusion

Pregnancy-related evidence remains uncertain
