Low intake and deficiency are different questions
Magnesium deficiency concerns insufficient magnesium for the body’s needs; low dietary intake can contribute. A serum magnesium measurement does not reliably reflect all magnesium in the body or tissues, so it is only one part of assessing magnesium status. What form comparisons can tell you
Magnesium supplements pair the mineral with different anions, and that pairing changes how much magnesium the body can absorb. In a human study, magnesium citrate was more soluble and more bioavailable than magnesium oxide, which is poorly soluble. Glycinate-specific absorption was not measured in these sources, so form choice is best framed around solubility and tolerability rather than a single winner. Based on a human-focused narrative review describing structure-activity relationships across magnesium salts; the review summarizes existing literature rather than head-to-head testing every form. From a single small non-randomized human trial using an acute 25 mmol oral load with urinary magnesium as the absorption marker; results describe citrate versus oxide only and do not establish clinical outcomes. The studied dose was 25 mmol oral magnesium load (magnesium citrate or magnesium oxide). Solubility figures come from one in vitro and acute human bioavailability study comparing citrate and oxide; glycinate was not measured, so its absorption cannot be ranked from these data.[1], [2]
Scope and limitations
The strongest comparison here is a single small, non-randomized human study of citrate versus oxide that used acute urinary magnesium as an absorption proxy rather than clinical endpoints. Glycinate was not measured in either source, so claims about glycinate-specific absorption or gastrointestinal tolerability cannot be supported from these data. The supporting review is narrative rather than a systematic synthesis.
